What is AAC?

AAC stands for Augmentative and Alternative communication. AAC are methods that can add to or be an alternative to our use of speech/mouth-word communication.

AAC could look like…

No-tech: a smile to indicate we’re happy, a cringe to show dislike, or pointing to indicate what we’re referring to

Lite-tech: drawing a picture of what you want to share, or pointing to a picture or symbol of the item you want

Mid-tech: pushing a button to hear a pre-recorded message when taking a turn in the conversation or activity

High-tech: a dynamic display on a tablet or on a dedicated speech generating device (SGD)

And AAC might be used…

Short term: while developing speech and language skills

Temporarily: such as after a medical procedure

Part time: such as when someone is unable to access their mouth words when stressed or anxious, sensory-overstimulated, or with certain people or situations

Or all the time! Such as for someone who does not have access to mouth words in most situations or if it’s their preferred communication method. Communication is a human right, so when someone is not able to express themselves completely through speech, it’s important to explore AAC options. Whatever method of communication someone chooses to use is just as valid. After all, communication is all about connection, not compliance.
