Watching your baby hit new milestones is one of the most exciting parts of parenthood. One of the most anticipated milestones is crawling, which not only opens the door to your baby exploring the world but also plays a vital role in their development.
My name is Amy, and I am the PR and Marketing Associate here at Joy & Laughter Developmental Therapy. Today, we’re going to be talking about when your baby should be crawling and why it’s important.
Babies Should Start Crawling Between 6 to 12 Months
Crawling is a super exciting milestone in a baby’s development, and it typically occurs within the 6-to-12-month age range. Some babies might start crawling earlier, others might start crawling a little later. But the 6-to-12-month range is the general guideline. But it’s important to note that every baby develops at their own pace.
Crawling plays a really crucial role in things like refining coordination, strengthening muscles, and overall setting up the stage for future mobility skills such as standing or walking.
What Happens if Your Baby Doesn’t Learn to Crawl?
Some babies actually just skip crawling as a whole and they go straight to walking. But it’s important to note that crawling is a super pivotal milestone that helps your baby learn future skills. If they were to skip crawling, they would be susceptible to challenges such as:
- Delayed strength and coordination
- Hand-eye coordination difficulties
- Fine motor coordination difficulties
- Sensory integration difficulties
- Delayed gross motor skills
How to Encourage Your Baby to Start Crawling
What are some ways you can encourage your baby to crawl at home? The first would be tummy time. Having your baby lay on their tummy is important so that they can work on strengthening their arms, their shoulders, and their core, which are all essential to crawling.
Floor play and encouraging reaching is another good way to encourage crawling. By this, we mean having your kid on the floor and putting toys just a little bit out of reach to motivate movement and reaching.
Lastly, creating a tunnel or an obstacle course that will encourage them to move in different directions is another way that you can motivate your baby to start crawling.
