Karina brings to her OT practice many years of experience and life lessons from teaching children in schools and outdoor settings, assisting adults with special needs in their homes and communities, and in depth studies and practice in the healing arts. She a received her undergraduate degree from U.C. Santa Cruz in Biology, and has over 500 hours of formal training in massage therapy and yoga. Karina discovered the field of occupational therapy while receiving treatment for an injury in 2007 and wished she had found it sooner. She returned to school to pursue a Master’s degree program in OT at San Jose State University.
Karina has completed continuing education training courses in SOS Approach to Feeding and Integrated Listening. The SOS (Sequential Oral Sensory) approach focuses on increasing a child’s comfort level by exploring and learning about the different properties of food. The program allows a child to interact with food in a playful, non-stressful way, beginning with the ability to tolerate the food in the room and in front of him/her; then moving on to touching, kissing, and eventually tasting and eating foods. Integrated Listening methodology (ILS) integrates music, movement and language exercises for the purpose of improving brain organization and function. ILS uses a staged approach, starting with the fundamentals of sensory integration and then extending through more complex cognitive functions, including language, self-expression and social skills.
In addition to loving the creativity and deeply rewarding work of being a pediatric occupational therapist, Karina is an avid outdoor-recreation and nature enthusiast. In winter, you may find her in the woods foraging wild mushrooms, at the seashore harvesting seaweed, or skiing down from a mountaintop. In summer you are likely to find her in the garden, collecting berries and making preserves, or at the beach free-diving and surfing. When Karina is not with friends and family, or busy playing, traveling, and working, she cherishes downtime spent reading on a tree-swing in her yard.
